Utilities
Make certain to notify your power, water and telephone companies that you're moving. Attempt to get "Perfect Payment Record" letters from them: they can save you a lot of money in deposits when you apply for service at your new home.
Taxes
Some moving expenses are tax deductible, so keep all your receipts. Your tax advisor can inform you as to what you can deduct.
Address Change
Send cards to everyone who will need to know your new address, preferably 30 days before you move. Make sure to notify the post office, also 30 days in advance, so that they may forward your mail.
Clubs and Organizations
If you are a member of a club or organization, let them know you are moving. Part of the unused dues might be refundable.
Pets
Contact your license veterinarian for a health certificate, plus a vacination certificate. When you get into your new residence, remember it's also new to your pet. Using the old food bowl and bedding will help him acclimate.
Packing Suggestions
Reinforce the bottom of all boxes with tape.
Pack one room at a time and label each box with the room and its contents.
Mark boxes with fragile items clearly.
Get rid of items you do not want to move.
Electronics: If possible, move these items in the original shipping boxes. Wrap each piece in bubble wrap or foam packing material. Immobilizing moving parts and remove all cables and cords.
Computers require special care when moving. Make backup copies of all files and store them with your original program disks. Remove any floppy disks and CDs from the computer and be sure to close the drive door. To prepare your hard drive, refer to your owner's manual to "park" the recording heads for transport.
Paint/Mineral Spirits, Bleach, Matches, Aerosol Cans, Flammable Liquids or Corrosives, Fire Arms and Ammunition: Check with your movers to see what items they will exclude from their contract.
